History
More than Philanthropy: How two characters in a Company's name now becomes a Movement and a Mission for Social Good The story of Wofoo begins not just as a business, but as a tribute - a son's gratitude to his parents. In 1980, Dr. Joseph Lee founded Wofoo Plastics Company, naming it to honor his parents' hopes - aspirations for peace and prosperity during the turbulent 1960s. The name Wofoo (和富) embodied their wishes for Harmony (和) and Prosperity (富) but this story didn’t stop there. What began as a family legacy quietly grew into something far greater: a mission to uplift society itself. Dr. Lee’s success in business could have been an end goal. Instead, it became the foundation for something more meaningful. In 1997, he channeled his achievements into the Wofoo Foundation, transforming his parents’ values into actionable change. The motto—“Harmony brings family prosperity; cohesion makes a nation wealthy”—was no longer just a hope, but a blueprint for impact. **Growing Tomorrow's Leaders with Heart Dr. Lee believed in Hong Kong's youth and to him education wasn’t just about books and grades, but building character. The *W.F. Joseph Lee Primary School*, established in 2000, became a testament to this belief where values took root alongside knowledge. Here, children learned more than academics; they learned values, community, and their own potential. **Honoring Wisdom, Ensuring Dignity in Elder Care Just as his parents' values inspired him, Dr. Lee extended that reverence to Hong Kong's elderly. The Wofoo Foundation pioneered one of the City's earliest private nursing homes, emphasizing quality and professional care - a testament to his vision of prosperity as communal health, not just individual wealth. **From Philanthropy to Nation-Building Dr. Lee's service spanned national and local leadership - from the National People's Congress to youth and civic education policy committees - bridging his entrepreneurial spirit with social responsibility. Today, Wofoo is no longer just a company name; it's a promise: to unite communities, uplift the vulnerable, and turn the ideals of Harmony and Prosperity into reality.
